Message list does not reduce

I enjoy this game immensely but it did take a while to work out many of the right ways to do things. However I am stuck with the messages under News. These appear to disappear after you send gifts to the relevant neighbour but then they reappear next time you get new messages. The list just gets longer and longer. Am I doing something wrong?

It's normal to see previously accepted gifts in your Messages. As you receive new Gifts from neighbors or assistance, these older messages will no longer be visible. Hope this helps!
