Question about Visiting neighbors

I've been playing for quite some time now but never really understood the full gist of visiting others' forests and/or leaving gifts.

Can someone explain this to me?

When you visit your neighbor, you will receive a coin bonus for the visit. You can also help out your neighbor by tapping on any available habitats with a Blue Star (this increases your Star social rating) to tip them (this gives your neighbor extra coin bonus when they Collect from their habitat). Gifting allows you to gift Gems up to three neighbors.
