Gifts not in inventory

When my messages say I received gifts from neighbours and it's in my inventory, it is not? How do I get those gifts!

All gifts received from your neighbors will go into your inventory when accepted. If a friend accepted your request, it may not be in your inventory as sometimes these requests are not requests for items. Where are you seeing this message in the game and which item did you not receive?
