I was disappointed when after breeding a different set of parents I get a breed I've already got. Does the computer just make it up as it goes along? Or is this specific to one of its parents?

When you breed Nature+Rock you have three possibilities: common, rare, and super rare. Common is Plantlers, rare is Bamboon, and super rare is Grassquatch. Each time you have the highest chance of getting Planters and the least of getting Grassquatch. It is likely that you get duplicates.
