New player/basic question

I've been playing the Crime Scene Rio edition for a couple weeks, and I still don't understand the scoring on the scenes. Can someone explain to me the scoring system for the bonuses at the top of the screen that read 1X, 2X, 3X???? Thanks!

You get a certain score for each item you find. This score is multiplied by the number that your score multiplier is up to. Each time you find an item this bar increases. If you don't find the next item while the bar still has something in it (it decreases with time) or you click and don't get the correct item the bar resets to zero. So basically the faster and more accurately you find items the better your score and the faster it is to get your next star.
