Best way to collect sap?

Does anyone have any tips on how to get large quantities of sap? I've gone through my supply of sap fairly quickly. I bought a sap tree but that has only dropped one sap every 4 hours. I bought the sap tree a few times but its a little pricey. Is it worth it?

A quick summary for you:
* Sap trees - about 5 tends to grow but then 1 sap for each chop until they're gone
* maple trees - gem purchase but don't get chopped down and can drop syrup
* normal trees (not dead) - have to tend about 5 times then not a guaranteed drop on each chop
* tree logs - don't have to tend and not a guaranteed drop on each chop
* sir pig on occassion
* I think Ivy's hut on occassion
* the trapper trade in the royal exchange
* from one of the more basic adventures (sorry can't remember if it's vaults or bandits)
* sawmills
