Is there anything special I have to do to get this egg? I've sent my knights to the pyre caverns more times than I can count and still nothing.

Nothing other than doing the Pyre adventure. The only other option is to "buy" the egg by skipping the find the egg step, then you will get the egg in exchange for your 200 gems.
