I notice in the pay table it says that 5 wilds earns you 50000 coins. I've never even seen a wild come up in the first or last row. Do I need to be a certain level for this to happen or is it just that rare for one to come up in these rows?

Once you unlock a particular level, you can get any combinations for that level. Though, some may be more rare than others.

Could you clarify what you mean by "unlock a particular level"? Here in 2016, this is still a discrepancy - no wilds appear in the first or fifth reels. I can confirm this from a sample size of thousands of spins on a number of different slot machines.
