How can I request my neighbour for a gift? Thanks!

It depends. Are you trying to get building materials to complete a building, or are you just wanting the individual items like animals or trees? If it's building materials you need, then you need to actually purchase the building and place it. Once thats done then you double click it to bring up the manage screen and there you can request items from your neighbors. Otherwise, if it's trees or animals or dog bowls, you will have to leave a personal message on your own wall or your neighbors wall asking for the gift you want.

You can even leave a personal message on your neighbors' walls to request what you would like as gifts - including material or anything else. But you need to remember that they may forget and send you different gift.
