Newbies question : Army Post in defensive mode ?

Will the troops in the 'Army Post' default to defensive mode ? Will the troops automatically seek and destroy invading enemies ? And if true, how do I know the Army Post defensive radius ? Which troops are best in defending ?

No the only troops that defend for you are alliance troops
