While on the subject of tournaments I had an interesting idea I've seen done in some other games although it would take a bit of work to implement it into this one.
Why not have a weekly or monthly best of the best tournament players can choose to enter (you might have to cap it at 128 or 256 players or whatever based on their player ranking) where the best players can fight each other to see who is strongest?
Once the players have entered they then get paired against each other in a knock-out tournament (think tennis or similar) where they have 24 hours to visit their opponents base, build an army for it and then attack them. If one player wins both the attack and defense vs their opponent they move onto the next round. If it's tied 1-1 the winner is the player who did the highest amount of damage to the others base. If they both won 100% vs the other or did equal damage then maybe the higher ranked player goes through?
Eventually you'd end up with a quarter final, semi final and then grand final between the 2 strongest players (in both offense and defense) who would then battle it out for the strongest player of the week/month award. Top 3 or 5 players would get gem awards.
