Complete Guide to Ninja Tournament Victory -- all the rounds in one place!

Each challenger (arena's dragon) is followed by the rarity to be used and the colors/elements that are strong against it.

COLOR: Pick champions that have one or more strong colors against the challenger. Colors listed twice are NOT an error; they are actually scored twice because they are strong/weak against more than one of the challenger's colors!
RARITY: For the scoring grid currently in use, you only need to match the challenger's rarity. You may use a higher rarity, but you won't get extra points for doing so. C is common; R is rare; S is super-rare; X is unbreedable or retired; U is ultra-rare.
LEVEL: In rounds 1-20 try to use your highest level dragons after selecting for color and rarity. For rounds 21-25 and 26-30 strategies may vary, read the advices from other people!

-If you don't have a diamond, it's recommended to use the "Baby army" (Forest or Fire dragons) to face the diamonds with a little chance of getting a critical.

Bad luck, because NO dragon has a 100% chance of beating another. The best chance is 90%. So someone is going to have a bad result. (On the flip side, even a level 1 fire can beat a level 16+ diamond breed in the later rounds, which is fortunate since I don't have any diamonds to use in those rounds.) In the Ethereal tournament, I lost twice to a level 2 Sunrise with dragons that were supposed to have an 85% chance of winning. That's about a 2-3% chance that neither would work. It was just bad luck...but I did go on to win the tournament anyway. :)

I don't necessarily want it "easier", but the difficulty should come from the need to choose the right dragon for an opponent and the fact that a large number of high level dragons are needed. Those who have been playing for a year, even without being in a "select group" who were given wheels and battles and other "perks", have a good stable of dragons - and should have an easier time in the arena. We earned it. New comers, with few epics, no diamonds, etc, SHOULD have a far more difficult time. They have not EARNED it, yet. By making all battle outcomes so widely randomized that opponent selection means little and dragons can be beaten with level one random dragons, the tournament does NOT get "harder" - it only gets ridiculous. Being difficult is fun, IF we are given a way that we can strive to overcome the difficulty - through time (breeding and raising more, diverse dragons) and battle strategy (opponent selection that MEANS something!). Stop trying to make all things "equal" for everyone and in doing so, making it unfair for ALL. If I liked a random game, I would join the glassy-eyed, mindless people sitting in front of the slot machines pulling a level over and over hoping for a random win. I want a game where I can calculate odds, plan opponents, breed for better outcomes.... A game where I can actually affect the outcome. Come on TeamLava - give us a GAME - not just a random gambling machine for brain dead people.

I agree on many points. To some extent, it already IS a matter of selecting the best champions and having a formidable army of epic or near-epic super-rare, unbreedable and ultra rare dragons. It's not entirely random, but I'd have to say it is TOO random, especially where the minimimal odds are concerned.
To be a true tournament, the following needs to happen:

1. NO MINIMUM ODDS. Right now every champion that pulls up a score of zero or less has the minimum odds of landing a critical blow. That includes weak dragons that have a deep negative score against strong challengers, e.g. the baby Fires and Forests. Zero score should mean zero chance! Then we wouldn't have ridiculous situations like "Gee this was a super tough tournament, especially since I have no ultra rares, but I managed to beat Infinity-16, DarkAngel-16, Helios-20 and Crusader-20 with throw-away Fire-1 dragons! Yay, I'm a champion!"

2. NO ULTIMATE ATTACK. Look, this option has it's place in the regular arena where, in theory, if you run into a challenger that you simply cannot beat, you would never be able to move ahead. It's not a true victory; it's a skip. There should be no skips in a tournament! If you can't beat the challenger, you should NOT be able to move forward. We have a situation now where for up to 900 gold, you can guarantee that you only fight each round ONCE; and if you just can't stand the idea of what should be a multi-day event, another 120 gold will get you through the 30 rounds in about half an hour. We HAVE seen players complete tournaments in that short amount of time!

3. ONLY ONE WAY TO GET THE PRIZE. Win! Tournament boss dragon eggs should only come from tournament victory. The boss should not be in the market before, during or after the tournament. It should be given a slot in the album for players who want information about the dragon's colors, rarity, income, etc.; but no price tag. EVER!

4. LIMITED GATE-SPEEDING. You should not be able to speed the gates on ALL the rounds. This makes a mockery on what should be a multi-day event. If players could speed the gates only a few times during the course of a tournament, it would ensure a somewhat authentic pacing. We do still need the speed option, of course, because some players start late, or repeat certain rounds several times, creating a time crunch. Speeding gates to make it through before the clock runs out is one thing; speeding in order to blow through a tournament in the first hour is another matter. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad a handful of people speed through because it gives us a list of the challengers, but TeamLava can simply give us that list and limit the number of sped rounds.

If these measures are implemented, many players who really aren't tournament-ready in the true sense will be unhappy. They will not be able to complete the challenge. They will complain that it is unfair. That doesn't necessarily mean they are excluded from the tournament experience. A gold prize for rounds 5 & 10 (in addition to the current gold prizes for rounds 15, 20 & 25) can give sub-optimal armies a chance to at least win something, then sit it out when they can go no further. How is that not fair? If they are seriously interested in the true tournament experience, hopefully they will eventually bring their dragon collection to a point where they are competitive.

I have been trying for a diamond dragon for MONTHS to no avail.

I've been playing for over a year and am on level 115 and have no diamond. (I did give up on it awhile ago though, because it seemed so hopeless, so I just concentrate on breeding other dragons that I want. So it's not like I've been trying for a solid year to get diamond.) I'm saving up gold for a diamond because that's the only way I'm ever going to get one!

It seems again, that round 15, 20 and 25 have very strong opponents, as last time.

Yes, but now the spiked rounds are more appropriately placed. Last time, they were rounds 15, 20 and 24.
Spiked rounds now coincide with the gold prizes:
Level 15 between four at level 10
Level 16 between three at level 12
Level 20 between two at level 16 and two at level 18

This time a level 9 has been replaced with a fourth level 10. 14 rounds feature supra-epic challengers. Before the Kaleido tournament, there were only 10 supra-epics.

Nice to see different challengers like Caesar and Mirage in the tri-color gauntlet. Also, the awesome Leopard joins the Final Five! Who didn't get tired of seeing Dark Angel, Crusader and Helios? (LOL) It's really a fairly decent change-up.


There are a lot of the same opponents as the last few tournaments. I wonder why TL doesn't change it up a bit.

TL, take it down off the market. It's not "special" unless the only way you can get it is if you win it!

Knj00 has run experiments and confirmed that Ninja can parent, contributing black and red. But she has not reported it being able to reproduce its own champion element, so hopefully it can't. The breeding behaviors she has observed are noteworthy, and I certainly hope that will still be the case when I finally win the Ninja. 2-3 days or more to finish tournament, 27 hours to hatch, 27 hours to evolve. It's looking like a week or so before Ninja can dance in my den because I couldn't dream of condensing tournament, hatching and evolution and breeding into one evening. Unfortunately, that also gives TeamLava lots of time to fiddle with the Ninja's breeding patterns and, come weekend, it may not be the same dragon in the den that it is tonight.

I too dearly wish they would keep ALL the tournament dragons off the market. But the chance to sell anything for gold is not something that TeamLava seems able to resist.

If these champion element dragons start dropping champion eggs though, that's it for me, folks. I will hang it up in a heartbeat.

But where did the idea of using your highest level dragons first in the tournament come from?
I seldom post about breeding advice or battle strategy. I tried posting results at the beginning of a couple of tournements to show that perhaps littles vs littles worked, and might save your best for last, but nobody seemed really interested. So I stopped....
.....well, again I have started this battle using babies and so far haven't lost.
Not saying it's the right way, I just follow the color guide at the beginning of each new tournement thread and pick the lowest level dragon I have of the recommended color. So question is .....why does it work?
Round 1....level 1 Kaliedo
Round 2....level 1 Mistmoth
Round 3.....level 1 Mask
Round 4....level 7 emerald
Round 5....level 1 tiny

I LOVE the green & red! I'm so glad you have nailed this format because I never wanted to have to type one up again after the Phoenix tournament. Adding the red flags is very useful since we sometimes have to deviate from just the given colors. Players should note that the best chances come from combinations of the given colors, especially the double-listed ones, and adding errant colors should only be done when it is unavoidable. Colors that are strong against one of the challenger's elements but weak against the other have been excluded from each list so that you don't inadvertently neutralize your own efforts.

Friends, you are meant to adjust the list to your own collection. For example, there is no super-rare yellow-diamond available against Stainglass, so you would either use ultra yellow-diamond (Gold dragon), ultra diamond (Diamond, Infinity, Crusader, etc), or super yellow (Honeybee, Parakeet, Seabreeze, Leopard, etc).

NOTE: When facing an S/X or U challenger, an R champion with 2 strong colors will score like an S/X champion with 1 strong color; an S/X champion with 2 strong colors will score like an R champion with 3 strong colors. E.g., against Lotus (S/X black), there is no S/X white-green champion, and any S/X green or S/X white will draw the same odds as R white-green (Pegasus). Keep this balance in mind whenever you cannot enter a champion with the exact rarity and colors recommended in the lists.

That's a really sensible strategy, moostermine! And we've certainly found that lower level dragons can take down very high level ones; it's silly to think they can't take down the lowest. As you've obviously proven. =) And as the "baby fire brigade" tactic proves!

I think it's just instinct to go for your strongest dragons, but I'm not even sure how much the dragon's level matters at all.

I used Trickster, but there are a TON that have a 90% chance against Laserlight...Epic Mist, Coral, Sapphire, Super, Storm, Wizard, Mindvolt, Clown, Fireworks, and Aether are just a few.

Can I ask a question? ( and truly, I'm not questioning the time, effort and dedication of those who are real arena pros!)
But where did the idea of using your highest level dragons first in the tournament come from?
I seldom post about breeding advice or battle strategy. I tried posting results at the beginning of a couple of tournements to show that perhaps littles vs littles worked, and might save your best for last, but nobody seemed really interested. So I stopped....
.....well, again I have started this battle using babies and so far haven't lost.
Not saying it's the right way, I just follow the color guide at the beginning of each new tournement thread and pick the lowest level dragon I have of the recommended color. So question is .....why does it work?
Round 1....level 1 Kaliedo
Round 2....level 1 Mistmoth
Round 3.....level 1 Mask
Round 4....level 7 emerald
Round 5....level 1 tiny

When you exceed the level of the challenger, you receive a bonus to your score in direct correlation to how much you exceed the level. When you encounter a level handicap against challengers from levels 11 to 17, you still receive a bonus if your dragon is epic, but a much smaller one. When going up against challengers that are 8 or more levels above your champion (e.g., your epic against a level 18 or 20, or your level 6 against a level 14 or 16), you get no score at all for level.
Since challengers levelled at 1-9 are the only opportunity you have for a level advantage and higher score, it makes sense to utilize this advantage by fighting with epics if you can. You may beat a level 3 challenger with a baby or juvenile champion, but an adult or epic champion would be awarded a higher score and would therefore have a higher (though not exclusive) chance of rolling an attack for critical damage.
Remember everything is first scored. Level, rarity and colors or your champion relative to the level, rarity and colors of the challenger. The score determines the odds. You don't always need the best odds, but I'd rather have the odds in my favor any day.

That's a really sensible strategy, moostermine! And we've certainly found that lower level dragons can take down very high level ones; it's silly to think they can't take down the lowest. As you've obviously proven. =) And as the "baby fire brigade" tactic proves!

I think it's just instinct to go for your strongest dragons, but I'm not even sure how much the dragon's level matters at all.

Thanks for bringing this up; I'm going to try and keep it in mind going forward. It might not hurt to keep the big ***s in reserve when little ones can do the job!

Lower level dragons with appropriate elements will definitely have a shot at winning against higher level dragons, but the chances of scoring the critical hit is lower. Through 9 battles, I have exclusively use epic dragons and only once did I need to use 3 hits to win. Twice I scored a 100% hit and the remaining 7 times I had an 80% critical hit on either the first or second attack. During the previous tournaments I would use non-epic dragons and most of the time I would need three attacks to win.

Players should note that the best chances come from combinations of the given colors, especially the double-listed ones, and adding errant colors should only be done when it is unavoidable. Colors that are strong against one of the challenger's elements but weak against the other have been excluded from each list so that you don't inadvertently neutralize your own efforts.

Friends, you are meant to adjust the list to your own collection. For example, there is no super-rare yellow-diamond available against Stainglass, so you would either use ultra yellow-diamond (Gold dragon), ultra diamond (Diamond, Infinity, Crusader, etc), or super yellow (Honeybee, Parakeet, Seabreeze, Leopard, etc).

NOTE: When facing an S/X or U challenger, an R champion with 2 strong colors will score like an S/X champion with 1 strong color; an S/X champion with 2 strong colors will score like an R champion with 3 strong colors. E.g., against Lotus (S/X black), there is no S/X white-green champion, and any S/X green or S/X white will draw the same odds as R white-green (Pegasus). Keep this balance in mind whenever you cannot enter a champion with the exact rarity and colors recommended in the lists.

That's why I asked where the numbers came from! It's not that I think my way is better, I just never have been able just do the equation without being able to put the variables in and work it out for myself. I'm sure that epics do have a better chance against the little ones than the other babies, I just wanted to know who and how the " number crunchers" came to their results. For example the calculator percentages? Not saying they aren't right!
Same with the colour advantages! Yes, they are awesome and generally work! I applaud the people who have the brains and the patience to figure it all out, I wish I could do the same! But can you just tell me where to look for the data?
Just my curiosity here, otherwise I'm perfectly happy to go with my gut!

Agreed. I've won all tourneys since YY without diamond but only managed to beat Infinty and Crusader on the Ethereal tourney without ultimate before running out of time. That's probably why I'm not a big fan of the idea to leave us without ultimate.

Was hoping to finish 12 battles on day 1 but I took my first loss to Lotus using Epic Sunrise. Gambled a bit using a common dragon against a rare one and lost the coin flip. I might use a level 9 Fuzzy or a level 9 Griffin but that dragon has yellow which isn't a strong color against Lotus.

Does the black in Ninja split further into purple and blue when breeding? Leo ended up splitting all the way so I'm curious about Ninja.
The breeding calculator shows that it does split into purple and blue, but the wiki page doesn't specify.

Understood. =) I was level 103, I think, when I finally managed to breed a Diamond, and I still haven't managed to breed a second one, let alone any Diamond hybrids. It has also failed to breed anything useful on the Arctic Isles. Maybe I got a defective one?
