how do i request a specific gift from neighbors?

You have to purchase the habitat that requires that gift, then tap it twice to bring up the screen with the request buttons. I have no idea which habitats take which parts though, it's been forever since I built anything on that game. :)

You can also go to their zoo and ask them on their wall. If they visit and read your wall that's another spot to put it.
