how do i change my avatar picture to a pic of myself

can anyone help me with this situation. i have saw several ppl on bakery and restaurant story with pics of themselves instead of the avatar. i want to do this too. HELP?

I haven't connected it to fb but it still took a pic from my iPod photo library...yet I can't see it! Some other person asked me how I did it and I was sooo confused!
