Be sure that you dont have anything blocking your door. If nothing's in front of your door and still don't have customers coming in, try to gain more popularity. Higher popularity attracts more customer. :)

Yeah, the welcome mat and all other decor items prevents customers from walking into the occupied square.

The welcome mat is a floor decoration, so if you put in it in front of the door, it will block your door and prevent customers from coming in.
