Over 99 of an item in inventory?

Usually when I have 99 of an item I'm maxed out and get a message "You can't hold any more _____"! But today in the kitchen, I noticed that I had 100 saps. Is that normally possible or is it a bug?

I think it might be a bug cause this one time, I had 115 jewels in my inventory. But then when I used them up (under 100), when I maxed out next time, it gave me a message saying I maxed out.

I think they should allow us 999 per item. :D
