I find the iron rich rock seems to have a decent drop rate. Make sure you've got two mines as well. See this thread (http://forums.teamlava.com/showthread.php?39474-Coal) on coal.

Don't forget to ask any regular gifting buddies to send earth wisps. You can also sometimes get them from adventures, feed the baron and trade with bella donna. If you're really lucky you'll get the occasional lantern.
