Benefits to upgrading the mine?

Are there benefits to upgrading the mine/sparkling mine? I'm split between using gold nuggets for jewels in the royal exchange and upgrading my mine to level 5. I know collection time reduces a little each upgrade.

It seems like higher level mines are a little more likely to provide a better item (jewel wisp, etc), although I don't know if that has been officially confirmed

That's what I've noticed with my two mines. I have a lvl 5 and a lvl 2. The lvl 5 seems to give out better items (ie. Earthwisps, lanterns, etc.) and my lvl 2 will rarely give out the better goods and stocks to plain rocks and iron ore.

I upgraded all of mine, faster collection means more materials overall.
