expansion for gems is also just by one step? or can expand more at a time?

there are options - 14x17 40gems, 15x18 40 gems, 16x19 and 17x20 40 gems.

I'd take it to 17x20 for 40g! but I'm afraid if I tap it it would take 40g but only expand to 14x17.. is that so??
I know gem expansion doesn't require neighbors.. does it require already having the previous size?

you have expand in the order of the expansions. So start with 14X17 or whatever expansion u r up 2.

I learned that the hard way yesterday. I didn't lose any gems or coins though, but I also didn't try to use gems I tried coins. It sucks because I have to buy the 1 mill, 2 mill to get to the bigger ones and it takes FOREVER to get back up to those huge numbers! So annoying. If it costs 80 freaking gems to expand to the bigger ones, you should be able to skip! I'd totally do it then.
