Upgrading buildings

Hey there, I have just been asked to upgrade a few of my buildings, the only problem is they won't let me. My husband has shown me on his what the upgrade option looks like when you press a building, but this doesn't come up at all on mine. Is this something I have to wait for to complete the upgrade missions or has something gone wrong. They are the only missions I ave at this point.
