Gems from recipes

I'm trying to collect some gems by leveling up my recipes. when do you exactly get the gems, I have heard its when you get to level 2 and then when you master it. does that mean as soon as you cross over from level 1 into level 2? and to "master" means getting the recipe from level 3 -> 4? Or when the level 4 bar is all full..thanks in advance

Ok so u get gems when u reach level 2 and 4. The bottom bar tells u what level u r. Idk how many u need 2 cook but I'm sure some1 knows
