If I format my divice, do I lose my game progress?

I have a Sony Ericsson XPERIA with android edition 2.3.4 with karnel edition 2.6.32.9-perf, & since I'm having some issues like lag, freezes & crushes (especially while playing Dragon Story) I'm willing to format my divice, and update it if possible. I would like to know if I must do some back up or something, or the game data is saved. I mean if I reinstale Dragon Story & put my Storm8 ID will I have to start over, or put me where I was (lvl & stuff:confused)?
