I can't buy or breed another walrus

I have a goal to expand / complete my walrus family. I own one walrus and want to buy a mate, but every time I click to do it, it says I need to crossbreed one. It's also not showing up in the Market / Animals UI. Is this how it is supposed to work? We don't have enough gems and almost no opportunities to earn more, so this seems a bit odd to me.

Anyone else frustrated with this?

To get your walrus click on your lab button (in between your nursery and market buttons). Select sea lion and elephant as the two animals you want to breed.
