Breeding pattern/formula, is there any or just random?

I wonder if there's any breeding pattern used in the game. Maybe there's a math formula or maybe it's like in biology where there's dominant gene & recessive gene (or in this case dominant element & recessive element). It would be disappointing if the chance to get super/ultra rare dragons is just random. Any thoughts on this?
