What happens to a food item when you clear a counter?

Does it go in the garbage? I think a cleared item may have popped up on me today.

I see no storage option for surplus food.

If you clear the counter the food is gone. However due to the problems lately your game can sometimes go back in time, causing recent actions to be ignored. Feel like adding a "we apologize for the inconvenience and would like to thank you for your time, patience and money" ;)
