If you are going to visit each shop and gift then perhaps you can see whether the person is building something and then gift as per that.

Apart from that, in my opinion, when a new item comes out (with the weekly update) it would be best (and most relevant) to send this for the first two days.

Agree. And also is always good to gift, it doesn't cost u anything, storage has unlimited capabilities and you never know when u r going to need it. So when it doubt give what u wish to receive, what the other person gifted or look down the neighbors wall at what u sent as per request last.
