I wouldn't normally complain because in the UK, rain is expected all the time.

However, anyone see the horribly ironic thing here?
We are in drought in many places across the country. We've also had torrential downpours for days, plus galeforce winds which has led to flooding and electricity cut offs.

I'll give you a hint:
Drought and flooding at the same time.

Please make me feel better by posting your traumas too:p! (weather related of course)

Or post "it's lovely here" to deliberately annoy and upset me. Which is also fine.

How about it being 100+ the whole year? That's what it's like here in the Philippines. (Okay I'm exaggerating) How about having a storm while it's 80+?

04-30-12, 07:54 PM
Sorry Rachael - today was a gorgeous day here. But, for the last month or so, the weather has been so erratic it's not even funny. Turn on the air conditioner because it's close to 90, next day turn on the heat because it's 50.

I will complain about drought too. The morons that run the water company here say that drought is the reason they increased their rates. I'm sorry, but no amount of drought (that isn't even happening anyway) can justify a 400% increase on a water bill. The city is suing the company, but it's taking forever. I so want to move!

DAmanding
04-30-12, 09:37 PM
We just have the nearly 20 year severe drought where I'm at without the torrential downpours. Last year it was so dry that 30+ year old trees nearly died and probably would have if we hadn't broken the watering rules by watering them more than we were technically allowed to by city law. Let me tell you that going outside in 110 F/43 C weather every 15-20 minutes to move the water hose from tree to tree all day long every other day in the summer time because it will run out in the street otherwise is not fun either. The ground is so dry and hard it can barely soak in the water, so it just runs across the ground even with the hose set to barely trickle. Our grass hasn't been watered in well over a decade. Its half weeds now anyway. The pecan nuts on local pecan trees are HALF their normal size this year. The local lake, which is also the town's water supply, has lost something like 40 ft/12 m of depth in 15-20 years. Large portions of the lake are now so shallow that you can see trees out in the middle of the lake sticking above the water. One spot is so shallow that not even canoes are safe. Other small towns in this region have completely run out of local water and have to have it pipelined in from other areas. They have much higher water restrictions than we do. And people say God blessed Texas. Uh huh.

Feel better? :)

I don't know the temperature here right now. But I go out during the day I get covered in sweat, my shirt gets sweat stains all on it. You would think at night with no sun it would be better but no. I come back all drenched in sweat. I like hot weather but can't wait for the very hot weather to stop. April and part of May are the hottest months but I dont remember it ever being this hot before.

DAmanding

Rachael98
05-01-12, 02:29 PM
Wow.

I actually got some responses.

GG, that's terrible - 400%??? You should move here. We have lots of rain. Oh, except we lose about 3,000,000,000 litres (3,000,000,000,000 ml?) of water every day because of leaky pipes. Often burst from cold.

And I would turn down a 20 year drought. You can keep it...

The moral of the story is that water companies are *****s, and more importantly that climate change - which I'm pretty sure causes this stuff - is bad. Sooooo. Yeah. Stop excessive use of electricity. Except for TL games.

I would, but can you get them to crank up the heat a bit? lol I'm a warm weather type person - lived in Phoenix, AZ most of my life. I was walking around in 115F (46C) in jeans, no problem at all.

And I'm not joking about the 400%. They've even added a "customer charge" to it as well. So on top of it, there's a $24.95 (USD) charge every month. I've never heard of any water company anywhere doing that.

Here they SERIOUSLY raise the price of natural gas (it runs the furnace) in the months of January and February, the 2 coldest months. Sometimes it costs double.

Strange, as we NEVER get a higher royalty check from our gas well.

It's been 80 and muggy here, but I'm not complaining. The corn SHOULD be up in a week if it keeps up.

I live in New Hampshire, so my weather is unpredictable from moment to moment. New England is such a lovely place to visit, but to live here can be grating. I'm sick of the rain and cool temps! The past 5 years have been awful for May weather, but thankfully we didn't get much snow this year so all this rain won't cause the major flooding that has happened in the past. For the month of April we were under High Fire Hazard warnings, now we're under Low Flooding Hazard warnings.

Things change on a dime here, and the worst job to have is to be a weather anchor, as they're almost always wrong. :p

Lmao....sounds like Irish weatherforcasters. It is possible to get every season in one day in parts of Ireland. So our weather forecasters tend to be very vague, typical forecast sounds something like this:

Nervous weatherman: today we'll see a few scattered showers with a little sunshine, some high winds in places with a chance of sleet in the northeast. (he will be back to repeat this same forecast tomorrow)

Irish person watching the weatherman: right so......

Having said this I do miss the Irish weather. I like the rain and cooler temperatures. Living in the US (NJ) I love the winter, spring and fall but I really hate the summer. I'm just not built for the blazing heat and humidity.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a friend come to visit a few years ago for a week over the summer. It was mid-July and the temps were around 95 and the humidity was 100%, so it really felt like it was 105 out. She was complaining about how hot it was and how miserable she was. This girl grew up and still lives in Phoenix and all I could do was shake my head at her. Normal temps in the summer there are well over 115 but don't you know, IT'S A DRY HEAT. LMAO!!!!

To me, 115 is 115. I don't care how DRY it is, it's still DARN HOT! :p

I have to agree though that the humidity is a ****er. I hate that yucky sticky feeling that humidity gives you and like pinkster, it reeks havoc on my hair. I end up just through it in a ponytail or bun at the back of my head and be done with it.

I've determined (for me at least) Phoenix really isn't that dry. Yes, it's a LOT lower then other places, averaging around 30-40%. I've been back east in the summer - 95% with 80 is worse then 40% with 115.

But where I am now, the summer stays in the single digits for humidity, and only reaches triple digits for temp for a few days total. I love the summers here, but the winters can be horrible. Wind gets in, and makes everything so much colder.

Air conditioning is useless.

The engineers only come out to fix it during the winter, then it breaks about 2 hours in to a hot day.

We don't have a lot over here anyway, it's not viable because we get so little hot weather.

I'm in Alberta Canada. Not many people have air conditioning here. They said the rolling blackouts were due to a bunch of the power generator stations breaking down or something. It's not a usual occurrence to have rolling blackouts here. When the power first went out the first thing i did was to make sure i had paid the bill ha ha.

I've lived in Southern California my whole life and its 88 deg F (31 C) there today. But I'm temporarily working in the Boston area and this is my first fall and winter where the weather drastically changes. Today its raining and 64 deg F (18 C) and yes, I'm complaining. The other night I got back to the hotel after midnight and it was in the 30s F.

At the end of Sept I went into Boston when it was cold and raining. The next day I told a local co-worker that in Sept people in Boston were wearing winter coats and jackets that we wear in Dec or Jan in California. He said, "Those weren't winter coats, they were windbreakers!"

I know my winter clothes won't keep me warm in the Boston area. I went shopping for a winter coat/jacket yesterday and had no idea what to get to keep me warm during the winter, or if what was on the rack was for today's weather or for when its snowing. I asked another shopper and was told to get something puffy and preferably with down. Question for those with cold winters: What would you get? I just need it for one winter.

LMAO, they were windbreakers as that is what most people wear around these here parts in the Fall. A heavy winter coat with down is preferable, however where you actually are you won't have as much of the breeze from the water. You're not in Boston right, just the 128 belt of Woburn/Burlington? There are some bad downdrafts in that area in the winter so maybe go to D I C K' S Sporting Goods (it would star out the name if I didn't use spaces), LL Bean, Burlington Coat Factory, or Sports Authority and get a jacket that has good insulation with a thick hood. Since you're so used to So. Cal weather, I would even suggest a Ski Jacket, as that may be best for you since you're not used to the really cold temps.

I know there is a Work n Gear that I used to go to for my Dad's workboots, thermal underwear, and vests that he used to use for work (he worked on generators on top of buildings in Boston during the winters) and they sometimes had sales that I'd hit. You could try looking there for a heavy winter coat, but I think the closest ones to where you're staying is Watertown or Saugus. You could always shoot up Rt 3 and go to the one by the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua. That is the one he goes to now since they closed the one they used to have in the Natick/Framingham area in Ma. He doesn't really like the one they have in Worcester so just shoots up here and goes to mine instead. :p

There is a Burlington Coat Factory in Billerica, which is about 8-10 miles from Woburn. It is really easy to get to from the Burlington Mall, which I'm sure you've driven by or seen half a dozen times by now. It is on Rt 3a (Boston Rd) and you can get it from Rt 128 or from Burlington Mall Rd. I used to go to that one all the time when I worked in that area.

The closest D I C K' S in your area is either Natick (really really bad traffic in that area and a huge hassle IMO), Saugus, or the one I go to in Nashua right next to the Pheasant Lane Mall. In fact Natick probably wouldn't be worth the hassle, but the one near Pheasant Lane is really easy to get to. You just take Rt 3 to the Tyngsboro Exit (last exit in MA) and it drops you right at the Mall and it is right there.

Lmao pinkster! This is an interesting discussion. Someone not only complaining because it sucks but also they have no idea where to begin to handle it...maybe those of us with four seasons should be grateful at least we know about winter coats. But seriously down is the way to go if you aren't working outside, if you are working outside you would want insulated duck which is not what you are imagining right now.

Continuing with my original complaint about the weather in MA and what I need to do to get a coat to survive it:

I'm currently in a hotel next to the Burlington Mall on Burlington Mall Road, and have been to the Legal Seafoods in the mall several times this year and also over the years when on shorter business trips. I thought it was strange that there wasn't a Burlington Coat Factory in Burlington, but just googled it and found out it was founded in Burlington, NJ. I haven't been to Billerica, and almost booked a hotel there once, but decided it wasn't close enough to work. I've been to Nashua once when I was staying in Tewksbury, and might check out the Pheasant Lane mall one weekend and see what's its like to be able to buy everything without having to pay sales tax.

Coats with down are the best. Beware of imposter coats that look exactly like the down coats but are actually polyester filled. Read the labels.

I should mention it doesn't stop with winter coats. I have never driven in the snow. I have been a passenger in a car driving in the snow, but never behind the wheel. In a couple of months I'll complain about driving in the snow.

And I do own a down ski jacket. I can't remember the last time I wore it. I'm not sure where it is. I don't want to bring it to Boston.

Nope. Not on ice or snow. Now I'm hotel hopping because I get tired of being in the same hotel. Once the weather gets bad I plan on staying close to work. Then its the I-93 to and from Logan, and street driving the rest of the time. But yeah, stay away from me when I'm on the road.

Waves on lake Huron are supposed to get up to 30 feet tomorrow. I don't know how big that is but it sounds huge for a lake. The river (St. Clair) which is normally blue was an angry brown color today. I can't imagine what It's like in the middle of this if this is the edge of it. My daughter said she saw the ocean escaping It's house on the news, funny how little kids view things.
