The Strange History of Our 27th Letter of the Alphabet.

What is less known is how it got to be to the place it is today. Here?s a brief history recapitulating the most important areas:

Its original form was based on the Latin word ?et?, meaning, logic will tell you, ?and?.
As it was used in manuscripts in the following centuries, the shorthand form for writing it developed into what we see today.
At one point it was incorporated into the English alphabet (unofficially, as always with English) as ?and?, making 27 letters, at least into 1800's.
When reciting the alphabet, it was correct to say ?and per se and? (and for itself, i.e. not introducing another item to the list).
This cumbersome ?and per se and? got truncated into ?ampersand?, which is its official name as of today.

And today it is now not part of the ABC's anymore.
There where 2 more letters removed at earlier dates and 1 became our W, the other you can look up.

Unoxygenated human blood is purply, once oxygenized its bright red. It's never pale red or colorless. White blood cells or blood serum is colorless once separated from the red blood cells in a centrifuge.

Some Scary Facts.

If you sneeze too hard, you can fracture a rib. If you try to suppress a sneeze, you can rupture a blood vessel in your head or neck and die.

Nearly a third of all bottled drinking water purchased in the US is contaminated with bacteria.

Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over 1 million descendents.

You are more likely to be struck by lightning than to be eaten by a shark.

You are more likely to be infected by flesh-eating bacteria than you are to be struck by lightning.

When a pilot light in a gas barbecue fails to ignite the gas jets properly, it is easy for you to inhale gas accidentally while trying to light it by hand. If this has happened, when the match does light, sometimes a trail of flame will blaze from the jet onto your mouth, filling your lungs with fire. Oddly enough, you would suffocate before burning to death as the flame could consume the oxygen in every breath you would take.

The soft plastic headphones used on airplanes create a warm, moist environment in the ear canal that is ideal for breeding bacteria. Wearing headphones for just an hour will increase the bacteria in your ear by 700 times.

Four sunken nuclear submarines sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. One, a Russian sub resting in deep water off of Bermuda, holds 16 live nuclear warheads. Scientists and oceanographers are unsure what the impact of the escaping plutonium will have, but warn that corrosion could create the proper chemical environment for a massive nuclear chain reaction.

If the government has no knowledge of aliens, then why does Title 14, section 1211 of the Code of Federal Regulations, implemented on July 16, 1969, make it illegal for U.S. citizens to have any contact with extraterrestrials or their vehicles?

Ever wonder why the last months are Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec which is Latin for seven, eight, nine and ten ,respectively?

Before the roman solar year was perfected, there were only 10 months.

When the astronomers calculated the year as we know it today and presented the facts to Cesar with the need to add two new months, he ordered that the two new months be named after the last two Cesar's ... Julius and Augustus.

However, they would not allow their months to be at the end of the year, nor in winter, so they were created in the middle of the summer!

July and August :)

While the plutonium IS hazardous, the chance of a detontion is nil since it takes a very specific 'conventional' explosion to create a nuclear blast.

New research suggests that chocolate packs chemicals similar to the active ingredients in marijuana. Not that chocolate was previously considered drug-free. The treat contains respectable helpings of caffeine and theobromine, a related chemical. But chocolate seems to inspire a devotion that isn't fully explained by those stimulants. Chocolate contains three compounds chemically related to cannabinoids, the class of substances responsible for marijuana's sense of euphoria.

He carved a cross into the tree and the Devil begged Jack to let him down because he could not take the sight of the cross anymore. After Jacks death, he refused Heaven because of his evil ways, yet was denied Hell by the devil for tricking him as well. Instead, the devil gave Jack a single ember to find his way through the darkness with. The ember was inserted into a turnip to keep it glowing longer. After the Irish came to America, they opted using pumpkins instead of turnips because the pumpkins were more efficient in keeping the ember lit.

The Chicken meets its fate when the owner of the farm decides to have chicken for dinner and then after the axe comes down on the feathered meal's neck it runs around for a few minutes until it eventualy bleeds to death. Yes I believe we all know this. BUT. Did you know that the longest recorded chicken to live without it's head was named Miracle Mike? He lived for around ONE AND A HALF YEARS AFTER his head was removed!

So how was Mike able to survive? Scientists examined him and determined that the hungry owners had not done a very good job at chopping Mike's head off. Most of the head was actually removed, but one ear remained intact. The slice actually missed the jugular vein and a clot prevented him from bleeding to death. Apparently, most of a chicken's reflex actions are located in the brain stem, which was also largely untouched.

Immediately upon discovering the body of their comrade, the band's initial conclusion was to snap a photo of the body for later use as cover art to one of their later releases, the Dawn of the Black Hearts LP. Elizabeth Bathory (Countess of Transylvania, born 1560/61; died,August 21, 1614) was said to have been a vampire. She became notorious for her cruel and sadistic treatment of others, and is probably most famous…or infamous, for her bizarre take on beauty and skincare.

In order to improve her complexion and also to maintain her failing grasp on her youth and vitality, she is said to have slaughtered six hundred innocent young women from her tiny mountain principality. Apparently it all began as she viciously struck a servant girl for a minor oversight. She drew blood when her pointed nails raked the girl's cheek. The wound was serious enough that some of the blood got onto Elizabeth's skin. Later, Elizabeth was quite sure that that part of her own body - where the girl's blood had dropped - looked fresher somehow; younger, brighter and more pliant. It is then that she began bathing in the blood young girls as a beauty treatment for her skin.

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. (AP) -- Almost half of a $273,000 grant awarded in 2002 to fight the Goth culture in Blue Springs has been returned because of a lack of interest -- and the absence of a real problem. Blue Springs received the grant two years ago from the Youth Outreach Unit, money the city and U.S. Rep. Sam Graves trumpeted proudly as a way to fight a perceived "Goth problem".

$132,000 of the grant was returned because officials never found much of a problem with the Goth culture, which some students called a fad that most people eventually outgrow.

Slightly more than $118,000 of the money was earmarked for therapy, assessment and case management, and the plans also included a series of town meetings to discuss the issue.

"It never happened because referring someone for looking or acting Goth is not a concept that ever got imbedded in people's heads," project manager Allyce Ford said of the therapy proposal.

The town hall meetings didn't happen, either, she said, because there wasn't enough interest in the community to conduct them. About halfway through the project, the focus shifted from Goths to counter cultures and negative influences facing children, Ford said.

"You have to admit if you saw one, two, three, four or more people dressed in traditional Goth, it would be discerning," she said. "Those kids have every right to be there. I hope the lessons you're teaching are tolerance and understanding."

Assistant City Administrator Eric Johnson said despite the change in focus, the project helped dispel myths and stereotypes associated with the Goth culture. "That was part of the goal," Johnson said. "If we were able to accomplish that, we are able to accomplish something effective."

I don't think it matters, but you turn your arm so the underside is what you're using to measure. You put your big toe right where you bend your wrist so your hand is waving at your face, you'll see that with only socks on your foot is the length of that part of your arm.

I would sometimes think about that too when people would say certain/all animals were colorblind.

But in regards to owls, they're night animals, and as such have more rods in their eyes than other birds. Rods give better night vision, but no color vision, while cones give color vision, but poor night vision. But owls do have cones, and so they probably see color at low saturation, but do see it. That's a little I found out about this, so maybe it's a guesstimation (I know, not a word, lol) on what color(s) they can see since supposedly a lot of animals do not see in color.

I guess that makes sense, in a way that they just assume that all eyes work the same (meaning animal vs human). My sister probably understands and agrees with this, as she was originally going to be a Vet but changed her mind half-way through college and decided to go into genetics instead. She should have stayed on the Vet route. :)

Hey, animals talk to me all the time, I just don't understand what they're saying. Unless they're my cats, I always know what they want but that's because of their body language and the way they are looking at me like "duh, I want......". :p

The squirrel's talk to me, they tell me to stop trying to hit them when they cross the rode 2 inches from my tires. The Moose I almost hit on my way home from class tonight also talked to me, he told me that if I hit him I would total my car. Or at least that is what I imagine they were both saying to me by the looks I got and the scaddling away they both did. Honestly, today was not my driving day. Rocky & Bullwinkle's hometown, is actually based on a real place, International Falls, Minnesota. He nicknamed it Frostbite Falls after one reported called the area the "icebox of America". On a map, located on the northern border of Minnesota, right next to Canada, thus the "international" in the name. Today, its known for its recreational activities and beautiful national parks.

Here's my weird fact. I got it from doing a bit of research when i was doing a speech in class on dreams. Ever had a dream where there was a person, or people that you've never seen before? Did you know that you can't make up people in your dreams? You've actually seen that person in real life before. Those people are stored in the subconscious part of your brain, so you can't really recall them when you're awake because you can easily forget them! The mind works in mysterious ways! lol

The mind works in mysterious ways! lol
Yep, part of the why , you can later in life meet the girl of your dreams. Not so much today but when I was young about 1,000 years ago.

Oh you are right about that! Most all the soybeans and field corn grown nowadays are no-till, and those that do plow use chisel plows.
