i get the come back tomorrow screen when i sign on in the am (bonus for playing each day). however, as soon as i start requesting items i need it tells me i already requested all i can today. what am i doing wrong?

You're doing nothing wrong.
The gift/request system is done on a 24-hour loop (not reset at any point), eg. request 1 at 9am, 4 at 11 am and 15 at 6pm, then the next day you can request 1 at 9 am, 4 at 11 am etc.
The daily bonus is reset at midnight PDT/PST.
