is there any benefit to buying anything other than Basic items? they all cost more for no apparent reason other than style.

As I understand it, only the appliances marked as "forever" and "sonic" have special features. The "forever" ones allow you to keep cooked food on the appliance indefinitely without going bad. The "sonic" ones allow you to cook food in 20% less time. However, there seems to be bugs in both these appliances that prevent them from working the way the creators intended them to work, so I'd hold off on getting them until you hear otherwise.
