if I rename my farm, are all my neighbor notified automatically? or, do I need to notify each one individually?

Your name is changed, automatically, on all your neighbor's farms. They won't get a notification though, so if your original name is "Wonderboy" and you've upgraded to "Wonderman", they'll only see the new name on their neighbors list, they won't know that the new name is actually you.
