Help needed for a Farm Story newbie

Hey! I'm new to Farm Story, I only just started playing today :)
I may need some help though, so I really hope you lot can help.

My first question is:
I've worked out that the little sun shapes I get when I plant things etc help me to increase my level, but what do the little leaves do?

They indicate your mastery of that particular crop.

Thanks! So do you get anything special for being a master at a crop?

Yes. Each crop has it's own Gage. When the Gage fills up the first time, you will get points & will see one of the first leaf fill in for that crop. 2nd filled leaf will get you 1 gem. 3rd for more points. & 4th gets you points & 1 more gem. However, you will see a lot of discussion about this if you explore the forum. Up until August, we use to get a gnome when we mastered the 4th level of a crop. Now instead of a gnome, It is 1 gem.
