expansion problems

I'm getting frustrated with the requirements for expansion changing all the time. I see that I need so many coins or friends to go up in size, but as soon as I reach that amount and go to buy I find it's changed and now I need more. My first few expansions were fine, but I haven't been able to do one in ages because it keeps getting more "expensive". Is anyone else having this problem?

No. When you see something such as needing 10 neighbours, this unlocks the feature of buying an expansion with coins. You must always buy the expansion. As you buy more expansions they get more and more expensive to create a challenge: after all, the more you progress, the quicker you make money.

Thanks, I hadn't realised because it shows a little padlock item before the items locked by levels, but not those for neighbours. I understand now.
