Growing Trees?

I got some trees growing. Does anyone know what they do and what the benefits are to having trees? I got 3 Apple and 3 banana going.

I think they work the same as the trees in FS. You harvest them 12 hourly - apples, and 24 hourly - bananas. They don't need replanting ... they just go on and on and on and ...

Do you think the trees will die if not harvested?? I try to save my trees to use if I need food and crops are still growing.
