I have hundreds of different crowns, what are they for ?

You can use the crowns to craft dragons in the spell shop. There are different crowns for the limited dragons that are needed for events.
Once that dragon is no longer available to craft, you will not be able to use the crowns.

No, you can't reuse them.

Where do these originate? I have no option of asking neighbors for crowns

You will find that option in the Spell Shop, under the "MATERIAL" tab.
If you don't have enough of the Minor/Novice/Great Crowns to start crafting either the Mighty Crowns or the Omega Crowns, there is an extra button to ask those Crowns from your neighbors.
When you have enough of the Minor/Novice/Great Crowns to start crafting either the Mighty Crowns or the Omega Crowns, the extra button is disappeared.
