I dragged a regular aspen grove over to my farm to purchase and it gave me the golden one and took 16 gems 

That's exactly what happened to me!

It was the goal that said to buy the aspen grove. I tapped the buy button, it took me to the store. I dragged the aspen over to my farm, it gave me the golden one instead and took 16 gems.

After that the goal to buy the golden tree came up. I bought the second golden one and the reward was 16 gems.

I'm still short 16 gems from the first tree :(

They checked on this and verified that there wasnt error in game. They tried to test but unfortunately they have been unable to reproduce this problem. Could it be that you clicked by mistake because two items are very close in the Market to each other? I also tried in my game and it is working fine.
