How do I place animals and fences in Farm Story?

I'm a little confused....I filled up my farm with crops and harvested them all when they were finished. Now I want to use some of my land for fences and animals like I've seen on other farms. I click the store, then click the fence or animal that I want, then it says just click the square where I want to place it. I click it and it says to double click to plow it. That's not what I want, how do I get this to work?

My suspension is that you are trying to place these decorations on soil not grass. You can't place decorations on ground that has been plowed or used to have crops. You must sell you soil to make it grass (green) again. To do this, open up your option menu:

Then select the EDIT option at the far right:

Then you need to select the shovel at the top of the two options that appear and you will now be able to sell anything that you select. Sell the soil where you wish to place your decorations. The ground will turn back to grass (green).

You should now be able to place your decorations.
