why/how do some players have thousands of items

I've seen level 10 players that have thousands or tens of thousands of items. How could someone at level 10 have that many items? And why would you want to have 10,000 units of any given item if you only have an army of 5 or 6? Is there some reason to have more units of a particular item then you have army members?

No. No reason whatsoever.

why would they buy that many items? And how would they even afford to be able to get that many items?

Well, maybe someone just kept repeating a mission which has a chance to drop a certain item. Maybe someone does not know game basics. Maybe someone set a goal to buy a certain amount of all the items.

Anyway, item prices do not change, unlike the land, no matter how many of them you buy. Also, if the items has no upkeep, it means it's cheap low level item, not so hard to afford. And it can be bought over a long period of time.

So, there is no benefit of having that many items. And there's no reason as well, unless you come up with one.

I know players that just collect items for the sake of it, others camp up in the lower levels for months at a time building up items and income then blast through the game.
