"iPhone game developer Storm8 exploited an "electronic backdoor" to learn the phone numbers of players, according to a class action lawsuit filed in San Francisco."
http://www.boingboing.net/2009/11/05...-dev-accu.html they are finally being sued for what we found out was going on... "The number farming was not disclosed to players until an acknowledgement in August that described it as a "bug." The lawsuit claims that only "very specific and specialized software code" could do so, however, and seeks injunctive relief and damages." Funniest part about the story: "Update: Storm8 hasn't returned inquiries." Perhaps if you emailed them with a question about honor points you would have gotten a quick response.

They have probably been advised to not comment which makes sense. Parties involved with such things do not need to make a public statement as in most cases that ends up causing an issue. While this case might have some points it's going to be interesting. Will be interesting to hear/read what the outcome is if/when it's released. |

Thanks a new name to add to the ongoing list of things I've been called. I'll go add bonehead to the list now. I got more comedic relief from that - thanks. |

I want to assure everyone that we do not collect the phone numbers of our users. It is safe to install and play all of our games on both iPod Touch and iPhone alike.
Regarding the lawsuit, we currently cannot discuss any particulars relating to the case as we were only made aware of it yesterday (11/5/2009). |

Geez.
I just wrote a strong response on the Nov. 1 Glitch thread in the General Storm8 folder and now this... Sigh. I have no idea whether collecting phone numbers is legal or not, that is for the courts to decide. And I can appreciate how S8 can't comment. And I can appreciate that S8 is not intending the use of any information collection for malicious purposes. But, geez, it makes me feel UNCOMFORTABLE, given the increasing lack of CREDIBILITY the technical team of Storm8 has demonstrated. There was a server glitch, and there are reported and self-admitted people HACKING into Storm8's games. OK, let me see if I get this. There is PayPal data being fed to S8, you collect phone numbers. There are people who prey and steal this stuff. I am not a programmer or technical person, but these three waves (illegal use of hacks, server glitch, and you collecting phone numbers for whatever purpose) is VERY uncomfortable. At least, I did not have to provide you my social security number. Geez. This is an issue of CREDIBILITY. You may have the best intentions but the way you all handled the server glitch just begs for more and more discomfort. I, for one, am playing less and less. And, I am not paying for any more HPs, in any of the games, until your credibility (technical and customer service) is restored. Illustris |
