some items will disappear next year. and to get more of them you'll have to install it again, the special items will be available only in the special edition app. some items are like this from the beginning, i.e the new LTO is available only in the back to school edition app.

I searched the forums for an answer but couldn't find any, so here's my question. If I uninstall older "expansions" like this (4th of July), what, if anything, will happen? Will the items associated with this (and other) expansions disappear?

You can uninstall older seasonal versions of the games, you will not lose your items. Sometimes it takes a while for specific items to show up in the other versions, so check on the version you want to play to make sure it has all the current items. Once you see them on the other version they will not disappear .
