Building supplies n FarmStory

I have received a lot of building supplies but have no idea what to use them for. They are also not showing up in my inventory. Are there more than one versions of Farmstory or is there something wrong with my settings?
A friend has a version where he can find hidden treasures but I don't have such an option. He also can take a picture of his farm, receives coins for just visiting a farm but also has to double click to water a neighbor's farm and receive points. Is there some way to update to a newer version or will I have to reload the app and restart all over?
Why didn't they put instructions on the FAQ about how to use gifts? That would have saved a lot of time. I have been playing for months and still don't know how to use all the gifts I receive.
