You can do with more landmarks of the world....
More restaurants (Mexican, steakhouse, sandwich shop, etc), more stores (like electronics stores, sports stores, music stores, home stores) night life (clubs, bars, sports bars). Definitely more variety in high rises, both residential and business. These things would make the city more realistic.

Car decorations would be really need and add a bit of life to the city. We could place them on our streets.

-Museum
-Parliament Building/White House
-different mansion style
-College/University
-High School
-Gym
- Video arcade
- theme park
- railroad tracks
- different convenience stores
- car dealership
- a dock with perhaps a ship tied to it
- really large trees (not like the 1% magic case Christmas trees, but trees as big as houses)
How about an airport with some shady businesses nearby?

ok, so I went to the facebook app games social city and college town. they have EVERY item you can get of the limited selection in city story, plus dozens more. here is a list of items you can get that are not in city story (the format is the same, some buy with in-game coins, some with purchased 'city cash'):
candy store, newspaper stand, sandwich shop, toy store, pizza parlor, pub, car dealers, bus stop, bowling alley, seafood restaurant, mexican restaurants (2), sushi restaurant, art gallery, drive-in, tv & radio stations, wal-mart type store, hospital, baseball stadium (they have the field too like in city story, but this is a major league stadium), hardware store, book store, concert venue/amphitheater, barber shop, casino, dentist, airport, court house, carwash, mall, yoga studio, bbq stand, electronics store, optometrist/sunglass store, music store, record store, camp ground, mini golf, video game store, salon, bike shop, hot dog stand, pool hall, fitness center, museum, karate dojo, skate & surf shop, outdoor store, video rental, aquarium, art museum, laundromat, TONS more residences, TONS more business buildings/skyscrapers.
Now, city story is much better looking, and it's a phone app while these are apps under facebook on a computer. But I can't help but to think that if they made these game into apps, city story would be done. PLEASE Norman, make these items/venues available, and none of us will ever leave, guaranteed. continue to never have updates beyond the silly system of paying $5 for something you don't choose, and we'll all leave once other options become available.
How about some rectangle 2x1 buildings
Of course if TeamLava pull their thumbs out and actually provide half of what is being asked for we'd need a much bigger plot than 24x24 to fit them all in. More expansions please!
